With Diary of an Ugly Duckling, Factory combines theater and dance from Andersen’s childhood classic by continuing its investigation of the theme of diversity/identity and integration through simple and evocative language.
A Duckling Beyond Andersen uses the fairy tale as a pretext to tell a kind of diary of a small swan, believed to be a duckling, who goes through various stages of life like those told in the original story, and makes a real journey of formation in search of himself and his place in the world and the discovery of diversity as a qualifying and valuable element.
Birth and rejection by family, school and bullying, the world of work, love that is suddenly born and quickly can disappear even for external causes that cannot be attributed to us, hunting and then war as an inexplicable horror in anyone’s eyes, stages of a hostile world, perhaps, but one that will remain so only until our “duckling” is able to look himself in the eye and accept himself as he is, just as happens to the little duckling in Andersen’s fairy tale who, by reflecting himself in the lake, discovers his true identity. We should not hide the scars accumulated in life, because they can and should instead become our treasure.
A valuable show that has taken the company to prestigious Italian and foreign stages and into the world of theater and disability.
