To be doozy is an American colloquial expression of uncertain origin. It may refer to a flower, the daisy (from daisy in English); it may recall a luxury brand of sports cars (Dusenberg); or—our favorite option—it may pay homage to the divine actress Eleonora Duse, whose Italian surname was awkwardly pronounced overseas: “Doozay,” “Doozee,” “Doosay.” To be a doozy means to be astonishing, out of the ordinary, so peculiar as to leave others speechless. Exceptionally good or exceptionally bad—in simple words: odd. To be or not to be? To be, because in our opinion, it’s a compliment. With this conviction at heart, we dedicated ourselves to creating a show difficult to label, inspired by the artistic and human revolution of two heroines who lived for and in dance, for and in theater. The biographies of Isadora Duncan and Eleonora Duse are a passionate workshop of narrative and political ideas. Through their unconventional lives, they became pioneers of feminism, female leadership, and an art engaged with the present. These Doozies without makeup, without pointe shoes, often deemed physically nonconforming to the aesthetic canons of their time—thanks to their natural originality, generated wonder and amazement, leaving immense legacies to future generations. Where are these legacies, we asked ourselves, since, more than a century later, we still face the same struggles on and off stage: the same battles for equality, for fair pay, against the dictatorship of the physique du rôle and stagnant repertoires? The Doozies aims to be a work about the marvel of strangeness. We are convinced that our astonishing ancestors would have appreciated this boldness, since they constantly took a stand against the status quo—even when it was classical and mythical.

Silvia Gribaudi is an Italian choreographer active in the performing arts. Since 2004, her artistic research has focused on the social impact of the body, placing humor and the relationship between spectator and performer at the center of her choreographic language. Winner of Giovane Danza d’Autore with A CORPO LIBERO (2009), finalist for the UBU Prize as Best Dance Show and for the Rete Critica Prize with R.OSA (2017), winner of CollaborAction#4 2018-2019, Danza&Danza Prize 2019 as Best Italian Production with GRACES, and Hystrio Corpo a Corpo Prize 2021. In 2021, she was guest choreographer for Danser Encore, 30 solos pour 30 danseurs at the Opéra de Lyon. In June 2023, she premiered her new work GRAND JETÉ, co-produced by MM Contemporary Dance Company (IT), Biennale de Lyon (FR), Théâtre de la Ville (FR), Rum för Dans (SE), Torinodanza Festival (IT), TANEC PRAHA (CZ), Zodiak – Side Step Festival (FIN), and the international network Big Pulse Dance Alliance. Her works have been presented at numerous national and international festivals and created through collaborative processes placing dialogue and poetic encounters with other artists, companies, and communities at the center.

Marta Dalla Via, actress, author, and director, trained at the Bologna theater school Galante Garrone and later studied with Angela Malfitano and Francesca Mazza at the association Tra un atto e l’altro. She is co-founder of Fratelli Dalla Via, which created Piccolo Mondo Alpino (winner of the Kantor Prize 2010), Mio figlio era come un padre per me (winner of the Scenario Prize 2013), Drammatica Elementare, and Walter, i boschi a nord del futuro, all still on tour today. The company also wrote and directed productions for young audiences, such as Fa’ la cosa faticosa for Teatro delle Briciole Parma and SBUM! Yes We Cake for Piccionaia Centro di Produzione Teatrale. The company won the Hystrio Prize in 2014. Dalla Via has collaborated with various artists as actress, author, and director, including Corrado Augias, Serena Sinigaglia, Fabrizio Arcuri, Giulio Casale, Tiziano Scarpa, Natalino Balasso, Petra Magoni, Ferruccio Spinetti, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, Babilonia Teatri, Francesco Niccolini, Marta Zoboli, and Carlo Cialdo Capelli.
