Percussionist Joss Turnbull has realized numerous musical and interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with musicians and performers from non-European traditions. By using unconventional playing techniques, he expands the traditional sound of the ancient Iranian training and ritual drum zarb-e-zurkhane, to develop a hybrid percussive language. He has worked in Japan, Korea, the Middle East, and Europe. In 2019, he received the Kathrin Prize from the Jazz Institute Darmstadt and, in 2020, a fellowship from the Roger Willemsen Foundation. In his latest works—as soloist on his second album TURMOIL and in the duet WE IN A BOX—he explores the boundaries of musical expression.
