Boxing the Beat is a workshop led by musician Joss Turnbull that explores the relationship between music and boxing, a discipline that has made the Palestra Popolare del Quarticciolo an internationally recognized social hub. Through bodily and sonic practices, participants experiment with the body as a percussive instrument and as a space for listening, coordination, and interaction, bringing rhythm, gesture, and movement into dialogue.

Joss Turnbull is a percussionist who has created numerous musical and interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with musicians and performers from non-European traditions. Using unconventional performance techniques, he expands the traditional sound of the ancient Iranian zarb-e-zurkhane drum, used for training and rituals, to develop a hybrid percussive language. He has worked in Japan, Korea, the Middle East, and Europe. In 2019 he received the Kathrin Prize from the Jazz Institute Darmstadt and, in 2020, a scholarship from the Roger Willemsen Foundation. In his most recent work — as a soloist on his second album TURMOIL and in the duo WE IN A BOX — he explores the boundaries of musical expression.
