Gherminella

by Miranda Secondari
artistic residency in September 2025

open rehearsal + talk: September 3, 6:30 PM

performance: September 4, 6:30 PM

Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo

Gherminella is a choreographic practice, a work on sound and confused voice. Gherminella — meaning a prank, a trick — is a word derived from a sleight-of-hand game in which a small cord was made to disappear and reappear from a stick. The performance is composed of elements — sounds, voices, images, and gestures — that appear and disappear as the choreographic fabric unfolds, built from slow and precise movements that deceive and disorient the audience. The voice here is understood as a confused voice, one that cannot be transcribed: no meaningful words are spoken, only onomatopoeia, murmurs, whistles, clicks, and so on. The tongue, lips, and pharynx, like the rest of the body, contract and move, creating something that resembles noise more than articulate speech. Supporting the performer’s work — and blurring into it — is the live sound of Nicola Ratti, which eludes narrative and remains ambiguous in its spatial diffusion.

Miranda Secondari is a choreographer and performer. Her choreographic practice is oriented towards precise, time-dilated movements that bring forth unexpected images and reach a state of presence as a form of resistance. She works as a dancer for Lucia Latour’s company Altroteatro and co-founded the collective Anagrama Coreografico, active until 2014. In the years that followed, she collaborated as a performer, choreographer, and choreographic assistant with various companies and artists. Among her collaborations: musician Nicola Ratti; she also created the choreography for the film Krapfen by artist Diego Marcon. Her most recent works, L’assente and GHERMINELLA, have been presented at dance, theatre, and performing arts festivals, as well as in galleries and foundations, including: Galleria d’Arte T293 (Rome); Centro Culturale XNL (Piacenza); Fondazione Michetti (Pescara); Raum – Xing (Bologna); Short Theatre – Festival di arti performative (Rome); Tra questa gente esiste un sentimento – Teatro Petrella (Longiano); Festival Ammutinamenti – Network Anticorpi XL (Ravenna); Galleria d’arte Solito (Naples); Centro Pecci (Prato).

FROM THE WORKSHOP LO SGUARDO PERFORMATIVO
